  • RHEL won't boot past GRUB menu in non-rescue kernel post-update

    Posted on

Hi everyone, I wanted to check in with an issue following a recent update.

I run RHEL version 8.6 on a Dell Precision 7920 Workstation to do meteorological and photochemical modeling as part of my job. I installed some Linux updates on July 19, and since then I have been unable to boot into the GUI (I think it is GNOME?), or anything else, beyond the GRUB menu using any available RHEL kernel (8.16, 8.13, or 8.0). The only one I am able to use is the rescue kernel ("vmlinuz-0-rescue-"etc). I opened a case with RHEL support upon discovery of the problem, and we have been working through some ideas to fix the problem over the last two weeks. None have worked, however, and I wish to resolve the problem soon, so I am opening a discussion here to ask for the collective feedback and wisdom of the group.

Specific item of note regarding the problem:
    1. When I do a verbose boot (removing the "rghb quiet" options at the end of the boot command line in grub), it shows that it hangs at the line "switching to amdgpudrmfb from EFI VGA". I used a workaround to get past this issue (nomodeset), but even then it wouldn't load the login window. It sits on a blank screen and then several minutes later a mouse cursor in the shape of an "x" appears.

Here are some things I have tried to resolve the problem:
    1. Used the undo/rollback features to try to undo the offending update. I was successful in rolling back the update, but it did not solve the problem.
    2. Changed the default interface from "graphical" to "multi-user." This did not solve the problem. When I boot using the rescue kernel, it loads the CLI.

I am debating reinstalling RHEL entirely, because I need to resolve this problem soon one way or the other. I am eager to hear any feedback and thoughts on how to solve this problem.

Thank you all for your time.
