SPICE Wan requirements

Latest response

Hi, i'm having some bad performance issues with wan connections.

Which are the minimum WAN link requirements for having a good experience with spice?

Thanks

That highly depends on what you are doing inside the VMs. Also, have you tried to access the consoles locally? If you see the same, or similar performance over a LAN, it might not pertain to the WAN at all

Hi Dan, at LAN level is ok.

On a WAN link I'm having usability issues with Windows and Rhel guests using the rhev-tools and required drivers.

It's almost bearable with a 30ms delay on an ADSL link, but to be honest it wouldn't work on real life.

so I was wondering if there's any kind of references or requirements for wan access.

Sadly with a 3G network it was completely unusable from an end-user point of view.

Thanks for your insigths

Hi Andres,

That's definitely not normal. With RHEV 3.0, SPICE has been significantly improved for WAN usage and some basic internal testing shows a very usable desktop well beyond 30ms latency.

I recommend you take a look at the documentation on www.spicespace.org to find out how the new improvements have improved the usage over WAN and how to optimize. Additionally, you'll find some details about network tuning in the RHEV docs here: http://docs.redhat.com/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Virtualization/index.html

Andres, what version of RHEV are you using?

What other testing have you done? Does SPICE work well internally? What are the connection details there? Have you tested the same WAN connections with RDP or VNC? What was the experience? Is there any other traffic on the connection during the SPICE testing?

Hi, I'm undergoing on the wan tests, however I'm stucked with the usb redirection feature; until I manage to solve that I won't be able to continue the WAN tests, so bear with me for a few days and I'd provide a better analysis on this.

thanks
