Include ptpd support
ntpd provides time accuracy down to ~1ms. That's fine for home users and small businesses, but those of us in the finance space need much more fine grained accuracy. PTP provides single-microsecond precision with less drift and is far superior to ntp. Please include ptpd from sourceforge in RHEL 7!
Responses
I would very much like to get hardware PTP working in RHEL 7. It is hardware supported in the Intel 82576, 82580, and i350 controllers. But it still needs support from the kernel and software daemon.
You may find the following bit from the RHEL6.4 Beta Release Notes of interest:
New linuxptp Package
The linuxptp package, included in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.4 as a Technology Preview, is an implementation of the Precision Time Protocol (PTP) according to IEEE standard 1588 for Linux. The dual design goals are to provide a robust implementation of the standard and to use the most relevant and modern Application Programming Interfaces (API) offered by the Linux kernel. Supporting legacy APIs and other platforms is not a goal.
