  • RHEL 7 or 8 for a production deploy?

    Posted on

What is the recommendation for RHEL version if targeting a production deployment now (December 2021); RHEL 7.x or RHEL 8.x ?

The support policy lists the period of release and support for RHEL 8.x, but this doesn't appear to provide any overlap of minor release to allow moving between 8.x release and maintaining the ability to receive security patches until reaching 8.10: https://access.redhat.com/support/policy/updates/errata

Does this mean - that 7.x is the better release stream to target? RHEL 7 maintenance support ends 30 June 2024.

RHEL 8.10 is released in mid-2024 and supported until 31 May 2029. But the minor 8.x release all have maintenance support that only lasts 6 months with no overlap.

The release dates for 7 and 8 and period of maintenance support make it looks as if the intention is for RHEL customers requiring continues security patches to use RHEL 7 until the release of RHEL 8.10

Can anyone please advise or comment?

    Thanks in advance
