Subscription Import

I've started a trial of Red Hat Satellite. The 1st thing I need to do is distribute my subscriptions. I assumed the application could talk to my customer portal and dynamically retrieve the subscription but it seems I must export them to a flat file (manifest) and import them to Satellite? This seems so legacy! Is there no way to have Satellite talk to the Subscription portal?
