  • VNC Mac into RHEL 8.1 gives an error about incompatibility

    Posted on

    Hi,
I configured TigerVNC server on my physical RHEL 8.1 server as per the given guide:
    https://access.redhat.com/solutions/4201371
and VNC server is configured to start at startup and listen to 5902/tcp, that port is open on the firewall. I need to view the desktop of my RHEL server on my Mac and I tried to use the SreenSharing app for that by entering the IP of my RHEL server both just by itself, with appended port number 5900 and 5902 and at all cases I get this error on my Mac:

The software on the remote computer appears to be incompatible with this version of Screen Sharing.

Now, my physical RHEL8.1 server is actually a dual boot and the other OS is Ubuntu 20.04. Under Ubuntu, the connection works in an instant, no error messages. However, when my server is running RHEL 8 I get the message above.
On Ubuntu, it was sufficient to enable screen sharing via GUI (Settings > Sharing) while no matter how much I tried to do the same thing on RHEL 8 via GUI (Settings > Sharing) the dialog box wouldn't remember the password I entered that would have been rquired upon succesful connection(whilst it remembers it on Ubuntu).
I also tried to VNC into my physical RHEL server from a VM that is also RHEL 8 on my Mac via Vinagre but I can't even log in because every keystroke is echoed.
What's different between the remote screen sharing between Ubuntu and RHEL? How can I get this going?
