[VR] Repo's Difference or Alternatives.

Latest response

Hello
Environment : RHEL 8
Umm.. to install any high-end application, normally in RHEL 7 we enable the "Extra, Supplementary and Optional" repo's right.
But in RHEL 8 we have App-Stream repos. I'm actually confused by that. Like are there no Extras or Supplementary or Optional Repo's in RHEL 8?
Could you please explain it?

Thank You.

Venkat Ramana,

Please refer to this Red Hat discussion https://access.redhat.com/discussions/4171061 regarding this.

Hi Venkat,

Confused ? It should be exactly the opposite ... until now Red Hat provided software in a bunch of different repositories.
Starting with RHEL 8 you only need BaseOS, AppStream and, if you want to develop something - CodeReady Builder. :)

Repo ID: rhel-8-for-x86_64-baseos-rpms
Repo Name: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 for x86_64 - BaseOS (RPMs)
Repo URL: https://cdn.redhat.com/content/dist/rhel8/$releasever/x86_64/baseos/os
Enabled: 1

Repo ID: rhel-8-for-x86_64-appstream-rpms
Repo Name: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 for x86_64 - AppStream (RPMs)
Repo URL: https://cdn.redhat.com/content/dist/rhel8/$releasever/x86_64/appstream/os
Enabled: 1

Repo ID: codeready-builder-for-rhel-8-x86_64-rpms
Repo Name: Red Hat CodeReady Linux Builder for RHEL 8 x86_64 (RPMs)
Repo URL: https://cdn.redhat.com/content/dist/rhel8/$releasever/x86_64/codeready-builder/os
Enabled: 1

There are (as always) exceptions, some "special products" are available from separate repositories though, for example :

Repo ID: ansible-2.8-for-rhel-8-x86_64-rpms
Repo Name: Red Hat Ansible Engine 2.8 for RHEL 8 x86_64 (RPMs)
Repo URL: https://cdn.redhat.com/content/dist/layered/rhel8/x86_64/ansible/2.8/os
Enabled: 1

Christian
