Single package patching
I wanted to know if it is possible to patch a single package, i.e. kernel-2.6.32-754.3.5.el6.x86_64 without the remaining packages inside of an update through Red Hat Satellite. I know this can be accomplished with yum on the command line but wanted to know if Satellite still had this ability.

Hi Thomas
I believe your system is RHEL 6.10, or something close to 6.10 based on the kernel, it would have been helpful to mention your RHEL version and Satellite version.
Which version of Satellite are yo using? A properly provisioned satellite with channels for your RHEL system, properly presented to your client enables you to use yum commands such as "yum update kernel" and you can specify a version if you wish.
Thomas, a few questions, do you have a satellite? Is your satellite properly provisioned with recent content from Red Hat? Have you provisioned your satellite (not sure if you are using Satellite 5.x or 6.x) to present channels to your RHEL clients?
Help the community to help you with more details if you need anything beyond this, but if you have a properly provisioned satellite with channels, and clients attached properly with the channels visible, you can execute yum commands for the specific rpm you wish to update without having to incur the full weight of a total "yum -y update"
Kind Regards,
RJ
dropping this post, will come back with an answer for your query later today.
My initial thought, find the specific rpm you have identified (which one is it)? from the Errata menu page? Please let us know which specific Errata rpm you want. I generally do things through command line, and if you have the specific rpm, that's another method. Else perhaps someone else who is more familiar with the GUI can tell you how to do just one.
Which rpm is it, or rpms?
Thomas
If it were me, I'd probably use ansible (not tower) to push the specific targeted version rpm updates from the specific Errata. Or just use yum citing the specific versions you wish.
That being said, I'd be surprised if there wasn't a way to do what you're aiming for. I just generally don't deal with GUIs. I have many satellite 6 systems, I'm still kinda used to satellite 5. We haven't gone down the path of many GUI tasks because of (what we believe to be) inherent security concerns (NOPASSWD sudoers directive for foreman) we don't tolerate (we submitted an RFE with Red Hat).
Perhaps someone else in the community can help you with a GUI method. However, using yum and targeting the specific rpm versions (once you have them lined up) is another method because there's certainly many ways to achieve your goal
ADDED See the hammer cli guide chapter 8 which has some possible info for you, however it is probably heavier-handed than what you are looking to do. I'd personally pick yum and cite specific versions.
Wish you well with this.
