Hello,
I'm trying to figure out the RHEL OS version currently used for RHCE. Is anyone able to help me here?

Thank you in advance.

Current RHCE is based on RHEL7. You could find out more details here https://www.redhat.com/en/services/training/ex300-red-hat-certified-engineer-rhce-exam

Hi, yes, I know it's RHEL 7, what I need to know is whether it's RHEL 7.0 or 7.1 or ..... Cheers. Alessandro

Knowledge of the minor release version is not necessary in order to take (or pass) the exam.

Hi Matthew Juneau I wouldn't say that "knowing the minor release version is not necessary" - like I already mentioned, there were major differences with NFS, especially when it comes to kerberos and the name of the systemd units that NFS uses for it..

Hi Justin, that's exactly why I asked the original question.

I assume the information about what minor release version is RHCE exam is based out is not known or not available any where in the site. I presume that it won't be on most recent minor release version which is RHEL7.5 as of now, saying so, it would be probably on RHEL7.4/7.3. Anyone who has attended RHCE exam could say on which version the exam was based.

Hi Sadashiva Murthy M & all.. So I just received the following message from Red Hat support:

Its RHEL 7.0

They don't say much, do they??

Anyways, I hope this helps students not make the same mistake I made when attempting the exam.. All the best!

Hi Sadashiva Murthy M. This issue was definitely problem for me when I sat (and failed) the RHCE exam.. When I studied, I was using RHEL 7.4 (which was the most recent release at the time), but when I sat the exam, it was an earlier release (like 7.0 or 7.1). This made a big difference when configuring NFS and kerberos.. There were many differences and it definitely threw me off! I don't know whether I would of passed or not if this information was available, but after the exam attempt, I contacted Red Hat with my complaint, and their only response was pretty much "all the required details are on our website" - which is not really an answer in my opinion.. I can't say that I'm satisfied with their reply (especially after forking out over $500AUD of my own money to sit the exam), and I feel like they are ambiguous when it comes to exam details - which I wouldn't understand what they would gain from it, as it's a technical exam? Anyways, if I find out which release it uses I will be sure to let you know by replying to this thread.. All the best with your studies!

I sat the exam three weeks ago and it was RHEL 7.0. I studied using RHEL 7.4 and did not pass. I would not say this is the reason I failed but it did not help. I am now preparing to take the exam again using RHEL 7.0 to practice on.

When you study you should definitely use RHEL 7.0 as the setup for an NFS share with kerberos is different from RHEL 7.1 onwards. Additionally there was some other minor differences in the contents of man files and configuration files.

Thanks for your reply. I would like to address this issue with Red Hat, as I've seen quite a few complaints about this issue around the web, but I'm not sure who to reach out to? As I mentioned before, I tried reaching out to Red Hat customer service, but I was not satisfied with their response.. Another annoying thing about prepping for the exam is that when you explicitly download RHEL7.0, is automatically upgrades to RHEL7.5 after installing some packages!

Anyways, all the best with your studies!

@Justin Wilson - "Another annoying thing about prepping for the exam is that when you explicitly download RHEL7.0, is automatically upgrades to RHEL7.5 after installing some packages!"

I'm working around this as I practice for a retake by using an ISO of the version I want as a local repo on my scratch VMs. As long as they can't reach the internet then they won't be able to upgrade past that.

David Dembinski Yeah, I just realized that trick... I'd set up a VM using the 7.0 iso, then wonder why it was 7.5 after installing a few packages.... I think I'll have to set up a local repository, like you have... It's so annoying when you just want to study for the exam!

Hi all. I just received a message from Red Hat customer service that they now provide the OS release on the EX300 exam information page: https://www.redhat.com/en/services/training/ex300-red-hat-certified-engineer-rhce-exam

Hallelujah!!

Hey that's great! Thanks Justin, and thanks RH for listening.
