RHEL Remote Access

Latest response

Hi Experts,
I am deploying RHEL7.0 on server with 2 RHEL7.0 VMs (KVM) would like to ask about my option to access :

  • Host GUI remotely ?
  • KVM + VMs OS remotely?
  • What is the requirement and tool ? If there is a guide for implementing this?

I have read about VNC but it is a bit complicated how things should be done.

Thanks in advance

Hi AL,

The most easy way to access a VM from the host system would be via the ssh command. Boot the VM and find out the IP address, execute ip address and then run the command with the given address on the host system : ssh <user>@<ip-address>. When you want to access your VMs with a GUI, you can install virt-manager -> sudo yum install virt-install virt-manager. And "as always", I recommend to use the latest stable edition of RHEL, which currently is version 7.4 ... on both - host and VMs. :)

Thanks Christian for the reply. sorry maybe I ruined the point here (The RHEL installed as Bare Matel on Physical server with GUI) , I would like to ask about Remote access like RDC from Mac or Windows platform . So, I have managed to test TigerVNC between VM on my PC host. works fine .. Now, I maybe worried about security matter in real production environment.

Is there any certain procedures need to be take when implementing this ? Is there a different way other than VNC to set up this case ?

thanks :)

Hi AL,

NoMachine would be an alternative solution, but when you say that TigerVNC does exactly what you want and works fine, why not use it then ? Security level is something which is very dependent on an individual case, everybody has a different opinion on this topic. Eventually this archlinux Wiki article can help you to decide a little bit. :)

Thanks again :) I will give it a look , I was more concern how complex it is not to mention the (vulnerability) aspects since in real DC it will deal with : servers .. security (F5) , switches ... etc . yet I will check out your links and see

You're welcome ! :) Nearly everything new is complex at the beginning, but once you've figured all out and you're getting used to managing your remote systems, it later turns out to be quite easy - right ?

Hi Al,

Please see the following list of RH recommended "Remote Desktop" access applications, if you still have issues/questions please feel free to open a new case for our desktop team to assist with:

I use X2Go. It is available from EPEL, so easy to set up. It also provides clients for Windows and MacOS.
