Purpose of VM Network?

Latest response

Hello,
while studying RHEV, I see there are many logical networks one can create. I understand the use of the following common networks:

Migration, Storage, Management, Display.

Except: Virtual Machine network.

What is the purpose of virtual machine(VM) network and how does it work?

Thanks for your help.

Responses

Virtual Machine networks are networks accessible and usable by the virtual machines.

Behind the scenes, these networks are bridged using physical interfaces on the host, which in turn allows the VMs to communicate over the bridged interfaces. Without a designated VM network, your VMs would all be isolated from a network perspective. Conversely, non-VM/host-only networks are NOT bridged; hosts can use them, but VMs cannot.

The other network types you listed (Migration, Storage, Management, Display) are used by RHEV hosts in an 'administrative' capacity. They do not provide network access for VMs.

Thank you for the fast response. If I understand correctly, if I do not have a VM network, I will not be able to say "ssh" VMs right? Please correct me if I am wrong.

Thank you

That's correct.

Thank you very much. Let me take this opportunity to benefit from your knowledge.

How does "network label" work? How can I leverage it?

Thank you

I haven't used network labels in my environment, and I don't recall the topic being covered in the course. However, my understanding is that network labels are used to group networks and interfaces so that administrative tasks can be performed efficiently across clusters and data-centers.

Unless your RHEV data centers span dozens of hosts and/or clusters, you probably won't make much use of them.

Thank you Russell
