Tiger VNC setup frustrations

Latest response

Our company is considering RHEL 7 virtualized for one of our solutions, and it's been a while since I've used Linux. But I can google and read and remember some of the basics, but can't for some reason I can't get TigerVNC to run on a fresh install of the OS. I am using the 30 day evaluation version and have it registered.

I've googled the crap out of every error message and finally gave up and started a fresh install of OS. I set Selinux to permissive and first step was to use the VNC configuration, link below, tool to build the install file, and still VNC fails to start after running it as root. I got prompted to supply the vnc password and all looked fine, but then nope...won't start again.
https://access.redhat.com/labs/vncconfig/

I keep getting the error message when I review the status of it, using systemctl status command;
Jan 24 15:57:59 servera systemd[1]: Starting Remote desktop service (VNC)...
Jan 24 15:57:59 servera systemd[1]: vncserver@:1.service: control process exited, code=exited status=127
Jan 24 15:57:59 servera systemd[1]: Failed to start Remote desktop service (VNC).
Jan 24 15:57:59 servera systemd[1]: Unit vncserver@:1.service entered failed state.
Jan 24 15:57:59 servera systemd[1]: vncserver@:1.service failed.

I've found a thousand different ways to setup VNC server online and tried several of them. I thought after doing a fresh OS install, and finding the VNC configurator I couldn't miss....dang it. Same place I was before frustrated.

Hi Doug,

Sorry to hear you're having trouble getting VNC set up. I realize you've tried quite a number of setups and done a reload. Please bear with me, and I'm just curious, in the numerous ways you attempted establishing this, did you happen to go through the instructions listed at https://access.redhat.com/solutions/966063 (maybe you did). If not, please give that a shot. I'm testing it on a test system myself.

Kind Regards, -RJ

Thanks for the response. Yes, I've used the configurator and have found a couple of different articles on redhat.com on how to. Looking thru that manual method, the first instance I've seen of color depth being specified. The configurator doesn't specify that. Humm. When I try and start vncserver@:1.service it gives a message, Process: 1100 Execstart=/sbin/runuser -l user -c /usr/bin/vncserver %1 -extension RANDR -geometry 1024x768 (code=exited, status=127) I'm wondering if no color depth is specified it's causing remote desktop services to fail to start?

Hi Doug,

I'm not sure immediately, I'm still going through the procedure. I have a fresh reloaded system that I just installed "Server with GUI" groupinstall. I'll post back in a while.

Doug,

I too now see some of the dilemma you've faced. I've tried the Solution ID I found, and the documentation which doesn't exactly seem clear. I have another resource I'm going to try and get back with you here at a later time. I'm interested in finding the procedure that works. (I noticed in the documentation it says that for the service target file, it doesn't require a terminal number, but later it complains if it doesn't have one..., for instance).

Doug, it's tangled. I refer you to this discussion https://access.redhat.com/discussions/1149233 and the comments by the Red-Hatters (especially near the bottom). Again, it's a tad tangled. I've got to attend to other things, I won't be able to try this myself until later this week.

Perhaps someone else can help if needed, but I recommend reviewing that discussion and the Red-Hatter comments, and if needed, continuing the discussion in the link above paragraph where this pain has been explored.

Kind Regards, -RJ
