Hybrid Graphics With Nouveau HDMI Setup
Hello
I have an nvidia optimus setup with red hat 7.4 workstation, i was wondering if anyone can tell me how to setup a connection via HDMI with audio to a UHD TV.
If i plug in the HDMI it is not detected, naturally because the discrete graphics card is off, id like to have a script of a keyboard switch to turn the discrete card and restart x on and off.
Is there a way to do this ?
Kind Regards
Ryan

Hi Ryan,
The open source nouveau drivers support the NVIDIA Optimus technology out-of-the box. First check whether your HDMI port supports HDMI 2.0, because HDMI versions below don't support UHD. In case it does, launch the video application - for example "GNOME Videos" - with the dedicated graphics adapter : DRI_PRIME=1 totem ... now HDMI audio and video should be detected.
In case that it does not work properly (power management for automatic powerup and powerdown of NVIDIA chips with Optimus support and runtime management was introduced in kernel 3.12), you may want to consider installing a current main-line kernel, which is available in ELRepo. How to add the repository, you can read in the repository setup instructions on the project website.

Christian
