is it safe to use docker repos from rhel server on the workstation edition?

Latest response

most of our laptops in my company uses rhel workstation edition that does not have the docker repos.
i know that rhel server edition has it under rhel-7-server-extras-rpms repository but this is not available under the workstation registration.
so my question, can i can safely use the repo from the server edition without risking packages conflict between editions and in general if this should be working without issues?

Hi Asaf,

When the usage of the RHEL Server repositories is covered by your subscription, you can safely add the rhel-7-server-extras-rpms repository and install Docker from there. There will not be any package conflicts, because RHEL Workstation is built on RHEL Server. Both RHEL system versions are entirely the same, the Workstation edition just provides additional applications and packages. If the usage of the rhel-7-server-extras-rpms repository is not included in your subscription, you have two options - either acquire the necessary subscriptions or install the Docker Community edition by adding the Docker repository to the software sources ... but then you are using it on your own risk of course.

thanks for the answer. i have the subscription for both and i have a local copy of rhel repos in my infrastructure so i its not an issues of registration only if i should use it between editions . so im assuming from your answer that its safe to add the vendor repo and install\use it.

Hi Asaf,

Just to clarify : the best and most recommended way is to install and use software from the Red Hat repositories, so if you can add and use your local copy of the rhel-7-server-extras-rpms repository, you should install Docker from there. Adding external repositories is safe when you can trust the vendor, which should be valid in the case of Docker, but if everything works as expected and without problems when you install the packages from the Docker repositories is not guaranteed.
