trouble with GUI

Latest response

Hi,

I have one RHEL6.5 was working fine and suddenly having issue with booting into runlevel 5, it simply hangs after starting rhsmcertd service. below error is reported in the messages.

May 2 15:14:35 cmod95 init: prefdm main process (3060) terminated with status 1
May 2 15:14:35 cmod95 init: prefdm respawning too fast, stopped

I tried different article provided by redhat without any luck.

However, i was able to using runlevel 3 and run "/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon " then "startx" will bring me to the GUI interface.

Can someone please help me with the issue?

Thanks,
Denny

"prefdm" is actually a script that is supposed to start your PREFerred Display Manager. Have you verified that /etc/sysconfig/desktop file exists and specifies a display manager that is actually installed? Has the messagebus service been disabled?

i do not have desktop file in place, however i have other working system without desktop file. But anyway, i did try to create the file manually, but it does not help. the messagebus/haldeamon are both up and running . I do have gdm installed on my system.

Thanks.

Not the usual suspects, then. Are there any files named like /var/log/*dm.log? (with default settings, probably something like /var/log/gdm.log)

If such a file exists, it should contain any error messages from the latest display manager start-up attempt. Those might provide clues on why the display manager keeps crashing and init has to keep restarting it.

Actually, "/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon" should have caused the display to switch into graphical mode and it should have displayed a GUI login screen. The fact that you needed to use "startx" indicates that prefdm did not work.

there is no such /var/log/gdm.log file.

thanks.
