RHEL 6 upgrade to RHEL 7 fails

Latest response

Hi

I am trying to upgrade RHEL 6 server to RHEL 7. I ran preupg tool, fixed all failed items. Although some needs_action remained, but from my point of view these were not critical. After that I ran ~~~redhat-upgrade-tool --network 7.3 --instrepo https://example.com/pub/rhel7/~~~
After reboot system fails to boot with this message:

[!!!!!!] Failed to allocate manager object, freezing!

Do you have any idea what could be the problem here?

Is there a reason you are performing an in-place upgrade? In-place upgrades across major releases do not preserve all system settings, services or custom configurations.

Red Hat strongly recommends fresh installations when upgrading from one major version to another. Does Red Hat support upgrades between major versions of Red Hat Enterprise Linux?

Hi

Yes, there is a reason.

If Red Hat has released these tools and even documented their usage then I believe it is supported and possible.

Red Hat supports RHEL 6 to 7 upgrades only for specific use cases.

Check your RHEL 6 server meets the criteria. What are the supported use cases for upgrading to RHEL 7?

Thanks Sam

I have read all documentation and my server meets all criteria.

Even though it is possible to upgrade an operating system from one major version to the next, it is generally not recommended to do it.
Most of all occurring problems derive from those upgrades, too many things change under the hood - so always perform a clean install.
