Backing up /etc directory

Latest response

Looking for / directions on backing up the whole /etc directory and the command i'm using RH doesnt like "tar cJPf $(date +%F)-$(hostname)-etc-tar.xz /etc/"

Already have the backup directory created....

I'd like to get it in a tarball or gzip file.

Thanks in advance!!

actually whatever is easiest to compress to with standard vanilla RH... tar.gz?

You might get better answers if you told us what you were seeking to accomplish. Also, if your host is SELinux-enabled and you want to capture the extended filesystem attributes, you'll want to include that in your post.

At any rate, there's lots of ways to skin the cat of backing up directory-trees.
