Question regarding appropriate Subscriptions to use

Latest response

I'm trying to clarify which subscriptions are appropriate to use in different situations.

We have the following 2 Subscription names available:
Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server, Premium (1-2 sockets) (Unlimited guests)
Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server, Premium (1-2 sockets) (Up to 1 guest)

The different types of servers/workstations we have are:

VMware based RHEL 7 Servers
RHEV based RHEL 7 Workstations
RHVH hypervisors (two hypervisors will host the RHEL 7 Workstations)

The Satellite server has one subscription attached. We have a "Subscription Asset Manager Organization" that has two subscriptions attached (this Satellite server and the Subscription Asset Manager Organization are actually the same server), and I've got 8 additional subscriptions available by deleting some hosts on the Redhat portal that no longer exist.

How do I move the available subscriptions from the Redhat portal to our local Satellite server? Does that entail creating a new manifest on the portal and importing into the local Satellite? And should the manifest be imported to the Satellite or the Sub Asset Mgr Org?

I want any new servers/workstations to register to the local Satellite, not the Redhat portal and would like them to get updates from the local Satellite server.

Thanks

Paul

Hello

I have not used Subscription Asset Manager so I cannot answer specifically about that, but there is a Subscription Asset Manager (SAM) Quick Start Guide on that landing page which has some links to more info on working with subscriptions.

From working with Satellite I can say:

  1. You must not delete the existing manifest from the Customer Portal or in the Satellite Web UI as this will unregister all of your content hosts.

  2. You can move a subscription from a host or manifest to another manifest by first unattaching it from the host where it is attached now. If it is in an existing manifest you can remove it from the old manifest where it is now, then add it to the new manifest. You can work with your subscriptions here Subscription overview.

  3. You can download an updated manifest and then refresh the manifest in use.

  4. You can have more than one manifest.

Thanks, that's useful info. I'm seeing we have a bunch of unused "Smart Management" subscriptions, and I see some of the current systems we have have something called "Flex" subscription.

What are they, and what is the difference between the two, and where are those appropriately used for?

Hello,

Flex Guest entitlements is a Red Hat Satellite 5 term, something which our esteemed Technical Marketing Manager Rich Jerrido knows a lot about.

Flex Guest entitlements are mentioned in the Subscription Management section of the Red Hat Satellite Reference Guide, under the "Virtualization Entitlements" heading.

I see them again under Managing your Virtual Guest Entitlements.

I see this term is not mentioned in the Transition Guide, I'll ask Rich Jerrido if that is an omission that should be corrected or if it is explained somewhere else.

Stephen, that info you mentioned on Flex entitlements is highly useful. I suspect though, in the case of the SKU called "Red Hat Enterprise Linux for Virtual Datacenters, Standard", that seems to appear as Flex entitlements. to the tune of thousands of (entitlements) systems (in our specific accounts, viewed on our Satellite servers).
