mod_nss

My question is; is there a way to configure mod_nss (or nss.conf) to support certificates with some kind of ID number for the CN attribute (in an environment where ID's are the convention for CN attributes). I read that normally the CN attribute in x509 certificates have to match the FQDN of the hostname.
