Default System Java on a Satellite 6.2 server
I cannot find that this question has been asked here yet. As many of us admins must deal with these days I have security folks wanting me to upgrade my java on a newly installed, and still functioning, Satellite 6.2.4 on RHEL 7.3.
I see that among other apps on Satellite, tomcat is using java-1.7.0_121 (openjdk) from package java-1.7.0-openjdk-1.7.0.121-2.6.8.0.el7_3.x86_64.
I cannot find any official Satellite documentation (yet) discussing the java requirement and which version to say with on the sat server. I did find this older RHN KB (https://access.redhat.com/solutions/1442573) which indicates to me just to keep 1.7 openjdk (provided by RH) on the system for use with Satellite tools and apps. I don't want to have any unexplained errors on my server.
Does anyone know where to find the official or unofficial requirements for Satellite 6.2.4 as it relates to Java packages on the server?
Thanks,
Chris
Responses
Chris,
The Java requirements of Red Hat Satellite 6.2 are not currently documented. As long as you remain on a Java version supported by Red Hat, the Satellite 6.2 instance will be supported. That is, you must install only Java packages obtained from official Red Hat repositories.
Regarding the initial concern regarding security, the Java packages, as with all other packages, are updated to address security issues. If your security team has a specific concern about a Java vulnerability, it would best to raise a support case so any concerns can be resolved quickly.
