Kernel panic after update

Latest response

Hello;
After updating the kernel to version: kernel-2.6.18-416.el5 (Redhat 5), and rebooting the server, i got a kernel panic error, and the system failed to boot.
This server is a virtual machine on Hyper-v. This version of the kernel worked fine on all the other VMs on Redhat 5.
Can you help me diagnostic this problem?
Thank you
Regards

Try booting to the previous kernel. Then uninstall the kernel with the panic error and reinstall it.

boot into older kernel and check if respective vmlinuz image file is generated for the new kernel under /boot . You may try rebuilding initird image and check. How to rebuild the initial ramdisk image in Red Hat Enterprise Linux

Also check to make sure your /boot partition is not full or almost full. I saw someone who never cleaned out old kernels, and at one point with another yum update, their /boot/ partition filled just at the same time it was installing the kernel as part of the yum update. It was a bit of work to rescue the system and get the new kernel installed, but that is one factor among many.
