Have RedHat Enterprise 5.2 with new subscription, cannot update packages

Latest response

Hello,

I have a DELL PowerEdge server which is currently running RedHat Linux 5.2. I have software on this server that requires me to download some updated packages for telnet and libraries through the package manager but I keep receiving an error. I have recently bought a new subscription to RedHat and need some help figuring out why I cannot update this version of the OS. I do not desire to fully install a new version of RedHaat as this may lead to severe downtime for client services and also may create complications when installing drivers, etc, with the new install.

Is this a common issue? I have not had a RedHat subscription for a few years and feel that my packages are very far behind in regards to updates.

Any and all assistance would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

Regards.

any error message would help us determine the cause of the errors.

Hi, sorry. I thought I had attached an image.

When I do

rhn_register

I receive a FATAL ERROR: We can't contact the Red Hat Network Server. Double check the location provided - is 'http://xmlrpc.rhn.redhat.com/XMLRPC' correct?

I know I have access to the outside world for this server, but may have the configuration incorrect for registering the box?

please try these two commands from the Linux shell prompt

host xmlrpc.rhn.redhat.com

ping -c 5 xmlrpc.rhn.redhat.com

After the host command, I received the address of 209.132.183.192, and all 5 pings were successful to xmlrpc.rhn.redhat.com.

I tried rhn_register once more after this and received the FATAL ERROR again.

If you connect to the internet from the network where the server is positioned, do you need to use a proxy?

If so, you have to configure this proxy for rhn_register too.

it may be easiest to set it up by editing the proxy lines in: /etc/sysconfig/rhn/up2date
