V3 kernel for RHEL6?

Latest response

Hello
Is there an officially supported V3.X kernel for RHEL6?
The closest I can find is ... http://elrepo.org/tiki/kernel-lt
Thanks in advance

Andrea, in short.. no.

RHEL6 uses the 2.6.32 kernel and one of the primary goals of the RHEL distribution model is to provide long term support for this version of the kernel through backports until the support period ends for RHEL6.

If you need a 3.x kernel I suggest moving to RHEL 7 which uses 3.10.0.

Specifically what feature from the 3.x kernel do you need?

The RHEL development process is such that we're constantly backporting features from upstream all through the Production 1 phase.

You may find your feature of interest is already in the latest RHEL6 kernel.

This process is explained more thoroughly on our knowledgebase at:

No. As the prior 2 posters stated RHEL6 will use a modified version of the 2.6.32 kernel through its life. All the other packages on RHEL6 are optimized to work together so even if you did somehow get the later kernel installed it would no longer truly be RHEL6.

RHEL7 is based on the V3 kernel so if you really need features in that version you should look at going to RHEL7.

Thank you for your replies. This was the response I expected, but just wanted to confirm. We have A RHEL6 product which we plan to port to RHEL7 over the next 12 months. An initial (and very dirty) port to RHEL7 seemed to show some significant performance improvements. The V3 kernel is felt to be the most likely explanation, but we haven't proven this yet, and certainly we can't be sure what features of the V3 kernel has made the difference. If a V3 kernel had been available for RHEL6, this may have proven very helpful in the short term. Given the information provided however, I will recommend we first try the ELREPO kernel in-house, to clarify/confirm our theory. Regardless of the outcome however, it does sound like we should prioritise and expedite the RHEL7 port. Thanks again.

That's exactly what ELRepo's kernels are provided for ... for testing purposes. Here are the links for those who are interested:

Hello Andrea,

The only supported V3 kennels for RHEL6 are the real time kernels which might not suite your needs.
