DKMS like offical RHEL tool

Latest response

On RHEL 6 the only way to install DKMS is to use the EPEL repo, is there any tool that is like DKMS that is in the default RHEL 6 repos?

I would like to know as well.

Generally we provide all supported drivers as part of the kernel package so there isn't a great need for a large dynamic out-of-tree module framework.

We do occasionally provide additional drivers in the Driver Update Program. These are delivered as kmod-based packages for a certain minor version (eg: RHEL X.Y) and because KABI is maintained within a minor version, the driver should always work within that version.

Generally DUP drivers end up in the next minor version's kernel, so again there isn't really a need for this to be long-lived.

We have had a Request For Enhancement to provide this in the past (Red Hat Private Bug 676769 - RFE: Ship or create a DKMS style system for third party modules) but this was declined by Red Hat Product Management.

This is covered a little more briefly on the knowledgebase at Is DKMS provided in Red Hat Enterprise Linux?

You also have the whole problem that DKMS usually relies on gcc being installed ...which is unacceptable to most organizations' IA groups for anything other than lab/test systems.
