Smart Management Add-On entitlements

Latest response

Hi,

I have both Standard and Premium Datacenter licenses which give me unlimited licenses for Redhat VMs

We will be potentially installing Satellite server 6.1 to manage all my VMs.

Can I verify if I need to get Smart Management Add-On entitlements added to my licenses?

Yes, you are required to have Smart Management in order to be managed by Satellite.

This is strictly a legal bullet it seems nowadays. There does not seem to be any technical restriction inside Satellite6.

In Exhibit 1.H inside http://www.redhat.com/licenses/Enterprise_Agr_EMEA.pdf you will find this statement: ”Red Hat Smart Management entitlements are required for each Unit of Red Hat Enterprise Linux that is managed by Red Hat Satellite Capsule, Red Hat Satellite Proxy and/or Red Hat Satellite Server”.

I would have preferred the Smart Management entitlement to be removed from Satellite 6 subscription quotes (as it would have made more sense). Mainly as it does not add any value at all on the customer side and also because there are no smart management entitlements for Workstations which breaks the logic even more making it impossible to be "subscription compliant" anyway.

I'd also look at changing your current subscriptions to include the smart agents

"Red Hat Enterprise Linux for Virtual Datacenters with Smart Management Premium"

so you don't have to purchase individual smart agents for your VMs, @ £99 could work out expensive.

If there is no technical restriction to using Satellite and with each content host not subscribed to Smart Management, how does Red Hat audit this?
