Migrating from Windows servers to RH Linux Servers

Latest response

Does any one have information on methodologies and best practices when migrating a system from Windows Server to RH Linux?

Hi Guy,

This really depends on what you're using the server for. File server, identity management, web server, virtualization, etc.? There is Red Hat documentation for setting up a Linux system for each of those use cases, and the migration path will most likely differ.

Hi Robert thanks for your response.
The functionalities I'm interested in are:
File Serving, using LDAP to replace Active Directory; Web Serving, Firewall, and Authentication.
"Identity Management" I suppose that's a "tad" bit more than Authentication.
I've seen the term quite a bit, so I assuming it's the "Latest & Greatest" functionality regarding securing system resources.
I'll have to learn more about it.

Cheers
Guy

Hi Guy,

File Serving: for only Windows clients or Unix too?
Windows: cifs/samba is an option
Unix/Linux: cifs/samba or NFS are options.

Web serving: Apache (httpd) is an option.
Firewall: firewalld (RHEL 7.x) or iptables RHEL 6.x or RHEL 5.x.
Authentication (better Identity Management): openldap-server (hard to configure via command-line tools), IPA or Red Hat directory easier to manage (web-gui or java-gui).

IPA and Red Hat directory are fully supported by Red Hat.

Kind regards,

Jan Gerrit

Hi Jan thanks very much for your response.
I'm well aware of the Redhat features.
I'm really looking for "cookbook" type of documents.
e.g. "Things to Consider When converting from MS Active-Directory to Red Hat Directory"
The File serving would be primarily for windows clients and some LinuxMint Workstations.
e.g. How to migrate from a windows app server to Apache.

Cheers
Guy
