Installed RHEL 7.0 but don't get a GUI

Latest response

Hi all,

I've recently downloaded the binary DVD for RHEL 7.0 and installed in onto my desktop. The install ran, but when the computer boots I only see a terminal interface (it looks like it is within the Kernal?). How to I get access to a GUI desktop?

Thank you!

What I see for network settings: (I don't mess with it.)

What I see after booting for the first time:

What I see when I type in ls -l /etc/systemd/system/default.target:

During the installation, at the Software Selection step, which one did you choose? Did you pick up the one that provides the GUI (for example, "Server with GUI")?

Thank you for replying! =)

Out of the three options I have within Software Selection:
GNOME Desktop
KDE Plasma Workspaces
Development and Creative Workstation

I chose GNOME Desktop, but I've also tried the third option with the same result.

can you attach a screenshot?

I just uploaded it. Can you see it?

I do not see it.

Kind of wonky, but it's there now!

Did you setup networking?
xorg-x11 needs networking to communicate. Even though this networking could be done via local-loop

I would like to see a screenshot of the final window once did finished the first reboot, that shows that x11 desktop fails to start

What is the output from:

ls -l /etc/systemd/system/default.target

I added a pictures for what I see for Network settings, right after rebooting, and what I get when I add the line from Akemi Yagi. I haven't messed with the Network Settings as I was hoping to connect after I had a GUI to work with. I am not very familiar with the terminal interface yet. I didn't see anything regarding x11, but I think it is safe to say that XServer isn't running, so that my graphics cards aren't running.
I hope this helps!

Thank you!!

Brandon,

It really shows that do know how to get the information too us. Great.

What happens is, noveau the standard driver/installer does not recognize the chipset of your graphics card. So the XServer setup fails.
The default.target is set to multiuser.target, so now you run in terminal mode.

Please check at the hardware certification section of access.redhat.com to look for know issues with your desktop versus RHEL 7.

Kind regards,

Thank you very much! I will definitely try that. =)

According to this article, this seems to be a known issue. The bugzilla is internal, so the progress cannot be seen.

Thank you! That is really helpful to know! I wonder how Dell installed everything the first time to get it to work...?
