Assuming that the underlying point-to-point connectivity is sound, you usually have to start looking at the mount-options between the NFS server and client. Sometimes, autonegotiation results in sub-optimal behavior and the only way to fix it is to explicitly set protocols, version numbers and read/write sizes.
