Critical security update for glibc fails to install (update) due to yum reported debug conflict

/usr/lib/debug/.../...debug conflicts between attempted installs of glibc-debuginfo-common-2.12.1-149.el6_6.5.x86_64 and glibc-debuginfo-common-2.12.1-149.el6_6.5.i686

Many compat-arch debuginfo packages conflict with their native-arch counterparts, which means that they can't be installed together. See this old bug : https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=528419 (still unresolved even in Fedora).

I need both i686 and x86_64 packages installed/updated. If there's a conflict between the two packages preventing install, this means that I cannot address this 'Critical' security risk.

You shouldn't have to install both packages. Do you have an earlier version of glibc-debuginfo-common.x86_64 and glibc-debuginfo-common.i686 now? That shouldn't normally happen, and only one of them (preferrably x86_64) should be installed on your system.

Thanks Radek, I was able to install just the x86_64 updates for the security issue. I also have a 32-bit glibc installed; I needed this to make Symantec Enterprise VirusScan for Linux work with their 32-bit GUI. I was able to update the x86_64 packages on by using

yum localinstall --skip-broken *.x86_64.rpm

Thanks again, I think I am in good shape. But really, for people like me that HAVE to have the 32 bit packages also installed, there should be no conflict between these that prevent installation of both.

. Much appreciated,

Good. I was wondering, though: Do you have to have glibc-debuginfo-common.x86_64? I understand that you need glibc-debuginfo-common.i686, but then you should be able to keep just this package, and "yum update" should always work.. Or is there anything that's trying to pull the .x86_64 package into your system?
