RHEL 7 and Apache Web Server

Latest response

I need to install Aache web services on a machine running RHEL 7 Desktop. I've registered the OS but when I run yum I get:

[root@localhost packages]# yum install httpd
Loaded plugins: langpacks, product-id, subscription-manager
rhel-7-desktop-rpms | 3.7 kB 00:00:00
No package httpd available.
Error: Nothing to do

Stuck. :(

The rhel-7-desktop-rpms might be the key problem, here. Would a service like Apache normally be in a desktop channel?

Probably not. Still, I could see a user running a personal web service. I discovered I needed Apache so I could create a URL to a file that is loaded by Jmeter to launch "service annoucment - over the air" files.

Hi Dale,

Yes, that's the case. The 'Desktop' product, as offered by Red Hat, does not include the httpd package. It is, however, included, in the 'Workstation' product. See Red Hat Enterprise Linux for Desktops or Workstations for an overview of the differences between the two products. (Basically, they're targeted at different sets of users.)

I found there are a whole slew of repo lists using yum repolist all.

However, I cannot enable all of them. I am so used to being able to do whatever I want in Linux this perplexes me (with a capital per ...)

Absolute worst case, you could use the CentOS repos to pull httpd ...but I'd generally recommend against that (unless you've no other realistic options).

You can either configure yum to consult that repo-system (recommend setting the "enabled" parameter to "0", though), or you can individually pull RPMs/dependencies from it. You'd potentially be putting your system in a weird support-state with respect to opening tickets with RedHat.

Thank you, I will try that. I have a virtual machine I try all configurations on.
