Description

A flaw was found in OpenSSL. Applications performing certificate name checks (e.g., TLS clients checking server certificates) may attempt to read an invalid memory address resulting in abnormal termination of the application process.

A flaw was found in OpenSSL. Applications performing certificate name checks (e.g., TLS clients checking server certificates) may attempt to read an invalid memory address resulting in abnormal termination of the application process.

Statement

This vulnerability is classified as moderate severity rather than important because it primarily affects specific use cases involving certificate name checks against otherName subject alternative names, a scenario that is not commonly encountered. The issue only triggers a denial of service (DoS) by causing an abnormal application termination, without compromising the integrity, confidentiality, or availability of data at a broader scale. Additionally, TLS servers, which typically don't perform reference identity checks during client certificate validation, are largely unaffected. The impact is localized to certain TLS clients performing specific name comparisons, reducing the overall risk profile and justifying the moderate severity classification.

Mitigation

Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base or stability.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

Understanding the Weakness (CWE)

CWE-843

Availability,Integrity,Confidentiality

Technical Impact: Read Memory; Modify Memory; Execute Unauthorized Code or Commands; DoS: Crash, Exit, or Restart

When a memory buffer is accessed using the wrong type, it could read or write memory out of the bounds of the buffer, if the allocated buffer is smaller than the type that the code is attempting to access, leading to a crash and possibly code execution.
