Fresh install, "failed to download metadata for repo 'base_install-AppStream'"

Getting the following error trying to do anything with yum or the gui software-update/install tool:

[username@localhost log]$ sudo yum upgrade

I've been using Linux for 20 years, but I'm new to redhat.
What am I missing here?
