About : Version numbers - Do they really matter ?

Latest response

Every now and then we see (new) customers asking how to get newer versions of software packages for RHEL. Red Hatter Scott McBrien
has published an article on February 20th, 2020 where he comprehensively explains what's going on 'under the hood'. In the intro he says :

Quote -> "Version numbers are important, but aren't always what they seem at first glance. Red Hat, for example, often
backports updates to the software we ship in Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) to maintain the version that we shipped."

This means that even though a version number may look old or outdated, a package can contain the latest security patches and features.
For those being interested in details - here is the post : What is backporting, and how does it apply to RHEL and other Red Hat products?
