  • RHEL8 - UDF FileSystem Support

    Posted on

In RHEL7 you can format a volume as UDF and you can also mount existing UDF volumes using kernel support fs/udf. You can also do this in Gnome disks.

In RHEL8 I'm not able to find mkudffs (part of udftools), so I don't know how to format a new volume for use with UDF?

There's also a serious bug in kernel 4.18 that prevents mounting most existing UDF volumes. Apparently this was fixed in 4.19, but RHEL8 uses 4.18? Details here:

This bug prevents Gnome disks from being able to mount the UDF file system.

Universal Disk Format is a vendor neutral file system that can be used on fixed and removable drives/partitions and allows storing data in an open standard format that can be shared across different operating systems.

Is there a newer/better file system to across multiple operating systems than UDF?
