Flatpak or RPM ?, which is worth learning first ?

Hello All

So ive set myself the challenge of working within an EL7 only environment in my home lab and home workstation, i want to learn as much as possible about packaging.

It may be slightly over zealous of me being so new but i would like to package the things i need myself some examples are:

  • MPV player
  • Plex Media Player
  • Lightworks
  • OBS Studio

Just to name a few, im not a fan of adding 3rd party repos outside of EPEL and rpmfusion usually causes me multi version issues i don't think modular repositories has hit RHEL workstation yet.

My Question is am i best doing:

A: Build rpms from source and host my own repository for the software listed above

B: Building/Installing with flatpak and dodge possible version issues with dependencies either being to old or not available

Kind Regards

Ryan

EL is good at lots of things, but in my opinion, desktop multimedia is not one of them.

I imagine you'd achieve your goal easier with a library bundling method like AppImage or Snappy or Flatpak.
