New to RH Satellite

Latest response

First off, i would like to state that im still relatively new to Linux and am still constantly learning how things work and ect. With that said, I have just successfully setup a base install of RH Satellite, and am trying to determine the proper direction to configure it for our environment. All of our Linux servers are running some version of RH, ranging from 5 to the latest 7. We already have a vSphere enterprise environment, so i dont think we really need satellite for provisioning purposes, however we would still like to utilize Satellite in some method. I have done some reading on everything that can be done with this product, and it seems pretty overwhelming as to where to start when you already have an existing RedHat Linux environment (around 200+ VMs). I've seen puppet referenced alot with Satellite, but we dont current use it. We have an Ansible instance, but havent really done much with it. We would like to see update management similar to WSUS, but im not sure if/how Satellite can be configured for that level of control of updates (or repos) to groups of clients.

Any insight or ideas on this is greatly appreciated!

Hi Jacob,

First examine this https://www.redhat.com/en/about/videos/summit-2018-red-hat-satellite-6-power-user-tips-and-tricks

Also see this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUNo3nddISo from the 2018 Red Hat Summit

Also see this https://www.redhat.com/en/resources/introducing-red-hat-satellite-6 which might be slightly dated,

And this is the slide deck from the 2018 Red Hat Summit on Satellite 6 corresponding to one of the videos above. this may take a while to download

Let me know if that helps
