Emacs 25.1

Latest response

I've been searching for some discussion on this, but to no avail. Is there any word on when/if the latest release of Emacs (v25.1 at the time of this post) will be added to the yum rhel-x86_64* repos for RHEL 6/7?

If not, might there be some fancy pants reason why that I might be able to pass on to my friends to sound smart at parties?

Thanks in advance.

Not in RHEL6 as it's out of Production 1. Probably never in RHEL7 either.

You can learn more about how RHEL packaging works at After an upstream project has released a newer version of a package when will the package on a Red Hat Enterprise Linux system be updated to this version?

Long story short - we usually stick on a major version (eg: RHEL 7's Emacs 24) then backport security fixes and selected features. That sort of version stability which is one of the primary defining features of stable long-life enterprise distributions like RHEL.

If you have a specific feature from the later Emacs version that you would like to see in the RHEL package, and you have a Standard or Premium RHEL subscription, please do log a support case explaining the feature and your business justification as to why this is required so we can consider it in a Request For Enhancement for a future minor RHEL version.
