Problem installing RHEL7.2 on 64-bit Macbook Pro

Latest response

When I attempt to install RHEL7.2 from a DVD, the RHEL7.2 doesn't see the partition I've prepared for it, which was done with the OS X Disk Utility. Any suggestions? My attempts with booting from a USB drive haven't been successful either, even with assistance from another utility. Thanks.

Jason,

Here's a couple of options, I hope one of these helps, if not, come back and let us know.

try this link at http://atodorov.org/blog/2015/04/26/installing-red-hat-enterprise-linux-7-on-macbook-air-2015/

also try this link if your macbook pro is older https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7059127?start=0&tstart=0.

Perhaps also make a RHEL 7.2 bootable DVD

What drive did you use on your macbook? Apparently, some drives do not work with installing LInux as shown at https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7400926?start=0&tstart=0.

Let us know how it goes, come back here if needed and someone should chime in and assist.

The above link wipes the SSD, but I'd like to keep my main OS X The above link suggests the top line of code for preparing a USB drive, but I've used all of them below and still have problems.

dd if=boot.iso of=/dev/sdb dd if=boot.iso of=/dev/disk1 dd if=boot.iso of=/dev/rdisk1

My USB drive appears to have the following files, but the boot process stalls anyway

efi/boot/ -boot.efi -boot.iso -bootX64.efi -enterprise.cfg

The links to the Apple Discussions goto a "back soon" page, so they don't provide any info.

When I do try to boot from the USB drive, I see a screen flash so quickly, I can't see what it says. Then, I get messages about ISO Tails not being found, even though it's listed as an option; I used to see ISO Kali, too, but it never did anything when selected. Besides seeing "Kernel not loading", if I choose advanced settings, I can select from 9 options. I chose 7- Debug Kernel, and 8- force disk to behave as if it were GPT (for Mac drives), but I just end up in GRUB, sometimes a selection will get me to a "kernel loop".

I'm trying to prepare for RHCSA and RHCE (using Jang's latest book), but I can't get RHEL 7.2 stable on my computer to do so. For what they're worth, here are some specs: -MacBook Pro 8,2 late 2011 -MBP81.0047.B2C -SMC 1.69f4 -OS X 10.11.4 (15E65) -Intel HD Graphics 3000 -MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-898: Firmware Revision: HE13 Interconnect: ATAPI Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive) Cache: 1024 KB Reads DVD: Yes CD-Write: -R, -RW DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO Media: To show the available burn speeds, insert a disc and choose File > Refresh Information

The RHEL7 appears in my finder as if it's been installed, but it doesn't appear in the boot options, whereas the USB drive does. I used to be able to get to RHEL from the USB, but now it isn't working and my original attempt to install it failed. So, I'm stumped for now! Thanks for your help, let me know if you think of anything else. Take care.

Jason, at the moment, I don't have any other info to point you to... another immediate option sans digging further... You could do an end-around, load the latest OS-X and then either use the free Oracle (formally Sun) VirtualBox software (free), ro pay for Parallels which works great.
