Client, Workstation or Server

Latest response

Hi,

I'm trying to find the correct version to chose....

We have about 20 Windows users needing to run Linux programs and workloads, they are only needing RHEL Client version. Our idea is to have one box for those users as they only need ssh or vnc access. As some of the workloads are cpu intensive we were thinking of using box with two cpu sockets. The question is if we are then forced to use RHEL Server version?

It's hard to say. It appears that the major differences are really focused around the availability of packages and number of supported RAM/CPU. Which packages you need will be determined by the types of workloads you intend to run. The other consideration is whether you want technical support or not. The desktop and workstation "subscriptions" only provides self-support which is access to Red Hat knowledge base and patch repositories but not technical support.

Realize as well that Red Hat is not "licensed" it is a subscription-based service. You are essentially paying for technical support and timely package/patch availability. If you don't need the technical support there are free Linux distributions (CentOS, Fedora) that could service you.
