How to Change the GRUB Passwd on RHEL 7

Latest response

Needing to update the GRUB password for RHEL 7 VM.

It appears that in RHEL 7, we are unable to edit /boot/grub/grub.cfg and need to use something called grub2-mkconfig .

However I'm not sure where to go once running the grub2-mkconfig command. According to my research, it different for both RHEL5 and RHEL6.

thanks

Hello

The revised chapter Working with the GRUB 2 Boot Loader in the 7.2-Beta version of the System Administrator's Guide has improved sections on these topics.

See new section on using grubby in the 7.2-Beta version of the System Administrator's Guide: Configuring GRUB 2 Using the grubby Tool

Hi Sri Harsha

encapsulating your code with three tilde characters "~~~" above and below will produce...

[root@tecmint ~]# grub-md5-crypt
Password:
Retype password:
<and so forth>

Chris,

Also see this Red Hat Solution by Ryan Sawhill https://access.redhat.com/solutions/979643 (note the strong caution at the end). Additionally, here is the corresponding documentation for this at Red Hat. Later I'll include the RHEL 7 kickstart directive (that I think hasn't changed) to do this at build time.
