Noob needs help with Internet for RHEL7 new installation.

Latest response

Hello

I am having a tough time finding a solution for a new installation of RHEL7 which is fantastic by the way but it doesn't see the Arris SBG6580 wireless cable modem gateway nor does it seem to see the wireless adapter that is plugged in. It does see the Bluetooth adapter so that is good.

I am mostly a click and go kind of guy and I like having RHEL so I find some set-up challenges difficult.

I looked in /etc at a couple of things that I read about in the https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/7/pdf/Networking_Guide/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux-7-Networking_Guide-en-US.pdf and I see that there isn't anything for the Cable modem. There is an entry for the Unknown with hardware address 00:00:00:00:00:00

I can use some help. Modem works when plugged into Laptop running RHEL6 and Laptop is on Wireless right now.

Should I reinstall and hope for the best?

Truth be known I had a wireless adapter in the USB and the install seemed to recognize it but at the time I was just getting the Cable Internet installed.. What can I say??? Christmas in July is always a grand time for presents.

Ideas?

Oh and by the way I discovered the Fedora 22 Workstation release.. Really fantastic experience to see such quality in the OSs'

I still am proud I paid for the Workstation on RHEL7 so I do have what I think is a respectable Workstation which is my anchor for experimental data compression.

As I seem to be advertising myself here let me share a new data type. I uploaded a paper to arXive.org last year and it is titled Introduction to Dynamic Unary.

Just google for the link.

Now that we know that numbers are not static we can assume there is a dynamic Mathematics in this Universe. It's something for Mankind to explore.

So I give I hope to get help here thanks.

Like I said I tend to be a click and go guy :)

sorry arxiv.org not arxive.org My bad.. typo

Hello Ernst,

Network drivers that are no longer supported upstream are not shipped in RHEL7.
Which network drivers were added or removed in RHEL 7?

To see which Wireless NIC you have, do:
lspci | grep -i wireless

For my laptop, I get:

04:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 7200 (rev 83)

To get more information on the NIC, do:

lspci -vvv -s

In my case that would be:

lspci -vvv -s 04:00.0

This can be used to help figure out which driver would be used with that NIC.

Excellent!

As I titled this post NOOB I feel really NOOB today as I was "hot" plugging a IDE drive into my power supply on the WorkStation and POOF magic blue smoke city. I was not thinking smart obviously so I now have on order a new motherboard, cpu and power supply unit which will all be here in a couple of days via Amazon Prime.

I will be applying your help in a few days and will give feedback as to what solution was approbate in the hopes of helping the next person.

So thank you and hang on a few... Check back for your warm fuzzy :) Seriously thanks!

Hey everyone!

I do not understand what happened but I now have access to my Cable Modem with RHEL7

The Magic Blue Smoke turned out to simply be a blown-up power-supply only. I am happy about that although I used the event as a reason to buy a new WorkStation. It's on it's way LOL... That IDE Drive, which killed my power supply, is now officially in the Trashcan. I cannot remember if I knew something was wrong with that drive or not. I assume I didn't know anything about that drive being "bad" and simply was keeping it around for "Some-Day" if I needed it for something.

So I thank everyone who read this thread but the problem has gone away on it's own.

I am now getting familiar with RHEL7.
