Which RHEL versions and architectures are supported as client systems managed by Red Hat Satellite server?
Environment
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux systems managed by Red Hat Satellite 5 or 6
Issue
- What are the supported combinations of Red Hat Enterprise Linux client systems managed by Red Hat Satellite?
- Which RHEL versions and architectures are supported to be provisioned and managed by Red Hat Satellite servers?
- What is the supportability matrix for RHEL clients registered to Satellite?
Resolution
Following is a matrix of which Red Hat Enterprise Linux version (supported versions as listed on Red Hat Enterprise Linux Life Cycle page) can be managed by which version of Red Hat Satellite server:
| RHEL Version/Arch (as client system to Satellite) | Satellite Version |
|---|---|
| RHEL 5(IA-32, IA-64, PPC, s390x, x86_64) | Satellite v 5.8, v 6.0 to v 6.9 (RHEL 5.7+ clients only) |
| RHEL 6(IA-32, PPC, s390x*, x86_64) | Satellite v 5.8, v 6.0+ (RHEL 6.4+ clients only) |
| RHEL 7(ppc_64, s390x*, x86_64) | Satellite v 5.8(except RHEL for Real Time 7)**, v 6.0+*** |
| RHEL 8(ppc_64, s390x*, x86_64) | Satellite v 5.8, v 6.5+^ |
| RHEL 9(ppc_64, s390x*, x86_64) | Satellite v 6.11+ |
Note: Red Hat Satellite 6 only support managing Red Hat products. If you would find value in Satellite managing other platforms, please raise this through your TAM or sales.
*Satellite 6 currently only supports management of s390x client systems, not provisioning. See Supported architectures for provisioning via Satellite 6
**Which product content sets are supported by Red Hat Satellite 5.8?
***Satellite 6 Quick Start Guide: Registering an Existing Host
^ RHEL 8 clients are officially supported only from Satellite 6.5 onwards.
- RHEL 9 clients are officially supported only from Satellite 6.11 onwards.
-
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 client systems are supported by Red Hat Satellite versions 5.6 and above, via RHN Classic tooling if Satellite 5.x and Red Hat Subscription Management tooling if Satellite 6
-
Red Hat Satellite 6 supports RHEL client-systems that are Red Hat Subscription Management capable - i.e., RHEL 5.7+, RHEL 6.4+, RHEL 7.0+ and RHEL8.0+ (for Satellite 6.5 onwards)
-
For more details about managing RHEL 8 content on Satellite 5.8 refer : Running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 on Satellite 5.8
RHEL 9 clients with Satellite 6.10 or lower versions
- Red Hat Satellite 6.10 and earlier versions have not been officially tested with RHEL9 so it is not supported.
- Crypto policies in RHEL 9 prevent Remote Execution with Ansible or REX from Satellite 6.10 or lower versions.
- Due to deprecated kickstart parameters for Anaconda the Provisioning of RHEL 9 will not work from Satellite 6.10 or lower
Important Information for Satellite 5 Customers
-
From January 31, 2019 RHN services are shut down and Satellite 5.7 and earlier will no longer receive content through RHN after that date.
-
Satellite 5.x with RHEL 5: All versions of Red Hat Satellite 5.x released to run on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 have reached End-of-Life.
-
Satellite 5.x with RHEL 4: All versions of Red Hat Satellite 5.x released to run on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 had reached End-of-Life
Note: All Satellite 5.5 and earlier versions have reached End-of-Life and are unsupported. You can also refer to the Red Hat Satellite and Proxy Server life cycle

On what platforms / processor architectures are these versions of Red Hat Satellite client platforms supported by Satellite 5.x and 6.x (32-bit x86, 64-bit x86_64, s390x, ppc)?
The RHEL Version and platform/architecture for client systems on the left are supported by Satellite Version on the right.
So for example, Red Hat Satellite 5.7 supports all combinations of client systems on the left.
updated with correction for RHEL 7
Hello,
The version Red Hat Satellite 6.1 can be installed in a s390x system base ?
Hello, s390x is not supported as Satellite 6 install base - for supported RHEL versions for Satellite server installations see: [Satellite] Which RHEL versions and archtectures are supported to install and run Red Hat Satellite server? also Satellite 6 installation Guide.
For provisioning go to: https://access.redhat.com/solutions/2674001
Thank you - added a note in this kbase.
Thanks.
Hello, Is RHEL 7 on Power supported ? In the article there is a ref "*excluding powerLE" saying not, but in this article https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_enterprise_linux/7/html/7.5_release_notes/power9-satellite it seems supported
"System management of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.5 for IBM POWER LE (POWER9) is supported in Red Hat Satellite 6 but not in Red Hat Satellite 5." Or the support is just for 7.5+ ?
This document i missing 6.4 and have a typo on RHEL 6
Hi Rickard, Thank you for pointing out the required corrections, great observation.
I have updated the article.
Thanks for the update!
We have RHEL 6.1 clients and satellite running on Version 6.4.2. Does this means my client which is running on RHEL 6.1 can't be configured with my Satellite ?
It depends what do you mean by "configured with Satellite". You can build VMs like those, apply some puppet (or maybe also Ansible) automatization on them, but you wont be able to manage packages there from Satellite. As Satellite6 uses Red Hat Subscription Management with
RHSMyumplugin only - see this solution how to migrate a system from RHN to RHSM for more. This document is missing the recent Satellite 6.6. Please update.
Good point, updated accordingly.
Does anyone know if satellite server can run on 7 RHEL systems not as a client, if not as a server? Thanks in advance.
Hi Ricardo,
Do you want to know on which RHEL release a Satellite server can run? RHEL 6.6.2 is best deployed in RHEL 7.7. You cannot install in on RHEL 8.y at the moment.
Regards,
Jan Gerrit Kootstra
We have RHEL 6.4 clients and satellite running on Version 6.5.2.1 Does this means my client which is running on RHEL 6.4 can't be configured with my Satellite ?
Hello, The solution mentions that Satellite6 does support RHEL6.4+ clients, which covers also RHEL6.4.
RHEL 9 not supported by RH Satellite 6.9.9/6.10.x? RHEL 9 is GA but RH Satellite 6.11 currently not, a bad joke? RHEL 9 provisioning with Satellite 6.9.9 is not possbile?
Bugzilla https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2090077has been raised for the same
CLOSED WONTFIX:-/
Add me to the list of people that thinks it was a mistake to release RHEL 9 without having any released version of Satellite that can be used to provision or manage it. RHEL 9 was in development for months, it should have been a priority for a released version of Satellite to fully support RHEL 9 at release.
When is 6.11 going to be released?
I also see these repositories now visible from our Satellite 6.10 subscription:
Are these just renamed "tools" repositories?
I've spent several hours trying to get Satellite to run remote commands on RHEL 9 without success.
Keep getting below error in /var/log/secure:
Connection closed by authenticating user root 192.168.21.122 port 37906 [preauth]
Can SSH to RHEL 9 endpoint using foreman SSH keypair from Satellite no problem. Have also tried loading an ecdsa key pair into satellite just in case was issue with rsa but not change.
I'm surprised RHEL 9 was released without Satellite support.
