Red Hat Enterprise Linux Timezone Data (tzdata) - Development Status Page

Updated -

The tzdata package contains data files with rules for various time zones around the world. This document captures Red Hat engineering's tentative plans, progress and status as upstream tzdata releases are packaged and released to Red Hat's customers and partners in Red Hat Enterprise Linux asynchronous errata.

All dates are approximate and subject to change.

Red Hat plans to release all tzdata updates, subject to testing and qualification and aims to do so promptly after each upstream release. In general, integration and testing of a tzdata update is expected to take a minimum of 5 business days prior to releasing the update to our customers and partners. Red Hat aims to minimize this time. Where identified, Red Hat will handle tzdata regressions and other major defects on a case-by-case basis.

- This update removed some files that had previously been considered obsolete. Removal of pacificnew was reported to break the java TZupdater tool. On 20201012, the upstream project released a patch to fix this temporarily to prevent TZupdater from breaking. In a future update, this patch will be removed and the obsolete pacificnew file will be removed.
- Additionally, the POSIXRULES macro no longer creates the posixrules file by default. In order to provide continued support for this file, we have provided a patch to initialize the macro so that it will continue to create the posixrules file. This patch may be removed in a future update. The posixrules file should be considered obsolete.

tzdata-2018e:
This release of tzdata 2018e is providing the "rearguard" data set for maximum compatibility with existing Red Hat Enterprise Linux installs. Future releases of Red Hat Enterprise Linux will be transitioning to the default or "vanguard" tzdata data set.

The "rearguard" and "vanguard" data sets are defined by the upstream tzdata project and represent approximately the same data, with "vanguard" optimized for newer time zone data tooling, and "rearguard" optimized for compatibility with existing tooling. For example "vanguard" implements support for negative DST offsets, while "rearguard" supports the traditional format.
