Why does kdump fail on HP system using the 'hpsa' driver for storage in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6?

Issue

  • Kdump configured on HP DL380 system to capture vmcore to local storage. But on testing it by triggering a kernel panic through the use of the '/proc/sysrq-trigger' the kdump service gets triggered and it hangs with the message:
Waiting for sda like device(s)

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6
  • The hpsa or cciss driver module being used for local storage (HP Systems)
  • Kdump service configured to save vmcore to local storage
