RHEL 7.3 and 7.4 guest OS's system clock is unstable on VMware ESXi

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

A time offset happens whenever system reboot is initiated. The system clock is synchronized with a remote NTP server before rebooting the server.

The time offset happens even if both "constant time synchronization" and " major event time synchronization" have been disabled. ( The procedure to disable VMware's time synchronization is described in Erratic time issues on VMware based RHEL guests running ntpd . )

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.3
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.4
  • kernel version 3.10.0-514.el7 (3.10.0-498.el7) or later.
  • kernel version prior to 3.10.0-693.1.1.el7.
  • VMware ESXi 5.5, 6.0
