kernel: qla2xxx: Unknown parameter `ql2xfailover'

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • After a kernel upgrade there is no connection to the SAN over HBAs supported by Qlogic
  • With the upgraded kernel booted, we get this message:

WARNING: No module qla2xxx_conf found for kernel $KERNEL_VERSION, continuing anyway.

Removed the Driver and then reinstalled and got the following message.
WARNING: No module qla2xxx_conf found for kernel $KERNEL_VERSION, aborting.

  • In order to get the system back and able to see SAN devices, reboot the old kernel and reinstall the driver package.

  • Additional errors from /var/log/messages: qla2xxx: Unknown parameterql2xfailover'`

  • Why do I get Unknown Parameter error for my qla2xxx driver when booting after updating my kernel on RHEL5?

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4, 5, 6
  • QLogic HBA
    • Third party qla2xxx driver was installed at the time of the upgrade
    • Third party qla2xxx driver has not been installed (properly) for the new kernel after upgrade
