Network Connectivity Lost on broadcom NIC with tg3 driver

Issue

  • Server suffer frequent  network connectivity loss.  The following messages are seen in log files when the issue happens: 
    NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth1: transmit timed out 
    tg3: eth1: transmit timed out, resetting 
    tg3: tg3_stop_block timed out, ofs=2c00 enable_bit=2 
    tg3: tg3_stop_block timed out, ofs=4800 enable_bit=2 
    tg3: eth1: Link is down.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 ( update 4 and later)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
  • Broadcom NIC with tg3 driver
