Cannot connect to RHEV SPICE console through a NAT firewall

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Our RHEV-M and RHEV-H sit behind a firewall. We have incoming NAT to the RHEV-M for the Admin Portal and User Portals, and incoming NAT to the hypervisors for the SPICE ports. We opening a VM's SPICE console, we get a black screen which times out with the error message:
Virtual Machine connection error: The client could not connect to the remote computer.
Remote connections might not be enabled or a network problem is preventing your connection.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3.0 and 3.1
  • RHEV Manager and RHEV Hypervisors behind a firewall, with NATs to public IPs on the firewall
  • External clients connecting to VM consoles via SPICE
