Proxy PAC Configuration Support in Yum in RHEL6

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Issue

  • Does Yum support Proxy PAC Configuration?
  • For GNOME applications one can already use PAC proxy configuration simply by setting under GNOME System->Preferences->Network Proxy->Automatic proxy configuration and using a URL like http://proxyconf/proxy.pac. But currently Yum only supports direct proxy URL definitions, like http://192.168.1.1:8080, using proxy=http://proxyconf/proxy.pac leads to errors.
  • It should be possible to use PAC proxy configuration with Yum, for example to consolidate proxy configuration in the organization (i.e., just keep the http://proxyconf/proxy.pac up to date) and to avoid SPOF (e.g. if 192.168.1.1 is down then Yum won't work). This of course without any dependencies to GNOME.
  • This scheme has been proposed in upstream already: Upstream BZ 542224.
