What is "nomodeset" kernel parameter and is it safe to use?

Issue

I have a display related problem in the system with Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
I am able to workaround the issue by booting with "nomodeset" kernel parameter.
What this kernel parameter does and is it safe to use it on the system ?
